Insurance patients
Treatment on medical prescription – billed with your statutory health insurer (Krankenkasse).
As an approved podiatry practice, we are authorised to bill podiatric treatments prescribed by a doctor directly with statutory health insurers (Krankenkassen).
If there is a corresponding medical indication, your doctor can prescribe podiatric therapy for you as a remedial treatment. The treatment is then carried out in accordance with the medical prescription and the requirements of the German remedies directive (Heilmittel-Richtlinie).
When can podiatry be prescribed at the expense of the statutory health insurer?
Podiatric therapy can in particular be prescribed for pathological changes to the foot where, due to certain underlying conditions, a comparable form of damage to the skin and/or toenails exists, together with demonstrable sensory or circulatory impairment.
These include, in particular:
Diabetic foot syndrome
Podiatric therapy for diabetic foot syndrome with corresponding pathological changes and damage to the foot, in particular in cases of diabetic neuropathy and/or angiopathy.
Neuropathic foot syndrome
Podiatric therapy for pathological changes to the foot resulting from sensory or sensorimotor neuropathy, for example in certain neurological conditions.
Foot damage due to spinal cord syndromes
Podiatric therapy may also be prescribed by a doctor for certain damage resulting from a spinal cord syndrome, provided the medical requirements are met.
Which podiatric services can be prescribed?
Depending on findings and the medical prescription, podiatric therapy may include, among other things:
Callus removal
Professional removal of pathologically thickened callus to prevent pressure points, skin damage and resulting complications.
Nail treatment
Professional treatment of pathologically thickened or altered toenails to prevent injury and consequential damage.
Complex podiatric treatment
A combination of callus removal and nail treatment within a single session.
Nail brace treatment
Treatment of an ingrown toenail (unguis incarnatus) using a nail correction brace. The brace is individually fitted to gently correct the nail, reduce discomfort and prevent it from ingrowing again where possible.
Whether nail brace treatment can be billed at the expense of the statutory health insurer is decided by the treating doctor based on the findings.
Your statutory co-payment
Statutorily insured persons who have reached the age of 18 generally have a statutory obligation to make a co-payment.
The co-payment amounts to:
- ✓10% of the cost of the prescribed remedial treatment
- ✓a one-off €10.00 per prescription
The €10.00 is therefore not charged at every treatment appointment, but once per prescription.
Example
If your medical prescription covers several podiatric treatment appointments, you pay a one-off €10.00 for this prescription plus a further 10% of the actual treatment costs for the entire prescription.
The exact amount of your personal co-payment may therefore vary depending on the prescribed service and the number of treatment sessions. We are, of course, happy to tell you the precise amount of your co-payment for your prescription.
Who is exempt from the co-payment?
No statutory co-payment is required from:
- ✓Children and young people under the age of 18
- ✓Insured persons with a valid co-payment exemption from their statutory health insurer
Please bring your exemption certificate or the corresponding proof from your health insurer to your appointment.
Please bring the following to your first appointment
- ✓Your valid medical prescription (Heilmittelverordnung)
- ✓Your electronic health insurance card
- ✓Where applicable, proof of your exemption from co-payment
- ✓Any relevant existing medical records required for the podiatric treatment
